Day Trip

Daphni Monastery (UNESCO Monument), Attica

(Guided tour)

The central church of the monastery is an imposing building with a large dome, which rests on small arches defining an octagonal space inside the church. In the 11th and 12th centuries, the church had rich ceramoplastic decoration, colorful marble revetments and exquisite mosaics on a golden background that complemented the luxurious construction. The crowded scenes of the mosaics narrate scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin. The individual figures represent archangels, prophets, saints, martyrs, bishops.

Archaeological site of Mystras (UNESCO Monument), Laconia

(Guided tour – An alternative plan will be followed, in case of unfavorable weather conditions)

The castle city is spread on the slope of a naturally fortified hill next to the imposing Mt. Taygetos. It was the capital of the Byzantine Despotate of Morea in the 14th and 15th centuries, a period of prosperity and cultural flourishing. It was a superb center of philosophy, culture and the arts, but also a characteristic example of a fortified Byzantine city. The site includes fortifications, the palaces of the Mystras Despots, urban buildings, the cathedral, several important churches and monasteries.
